Audio from the 2021 Charleston Library Conference from a session titled “Progress Through Partnership: The Dolly Parton Rule for Transformative Agreements” presented by Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe, Professor, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Sara Rouhi, Director Strategic Partnerships, PLOS; Mathew Willmott, Open Access Collection Strategist, California Digital Library; and Sybille Geisenheyner, Director of Open Science Strategy & Licensing, ACS.
“If you don't like the road you're walking, start paving another one!” Dolly Parton’s advice on how to be a “change agent” assigns responsibility to ourselves, not others.
If there were any doubt before, then the deal the University of California system agreed with Elsevier in March 2021 ended the suspense: Open Access publishing– and the future of Open Science with it – lie down a path that publishers and library leadership must clear one transformative agreement at a time. Working together, they are shaping the paving stones deliberately to make a road that can handle the traffic for researchers and institutions.
Each transformative agreement raises its own set of data and documentation requirements, including tracking and reporting on sophisticated financial information. New workflows as well as customer service support for authors and researchers are elemental. As in California, forging new and creative partnerships dependent on scalable, robust technology.
This presentation will provide an analysis of approaches that serve as a sturdy base layer to help develop solutions that meet the needs of all open access stakeholders. Additionally, panelists will showcase how a shared technology framework has increased collaboration and simplified communication.
