Charleston Library Conference

May 2, 2022

In this episode, we feature audio from the 2021 Charleston Library Conference from a session titled "From Ideals of Equity to Equity in Practice for Open Access” presented by Emily Farrell, Director of Open Research, Americas, at Taylor & Francis Group, and Greg Eow, President, Center for Research Libraries.

Libraries and mission-driven publishers exist at an influential nexus between the creation and consumption of scholarly knowledge. Both sides navigate the spaces between supporting the development of research and ensuring access to that research. Both require tremendous resources to enact their values: budgets to support human resources and technical infrastructure, alongside materials. The global pandemic further highlighted the urgency of open, equitable, and digital access to knowledge and has propelled many organizations to make a new commitment to open access models.

This session will look at models of open access that attempt to center equity, as well as the structural challenges faced in developing and implementing them. They’ll discuss the importance of collaboration between mission-driven entities to effect change in the systems that support knowledge access and distribution.
